Sure, you’ve been to a bunch of dance clubs this semester. But after a while, seeing guys wearing shiny button-downs and hair gel and girls in sparkly halter tops teetering around in too-tall heels gets old. Wouldn’t it be nice if nightlife in Providence had something else to offer besides the standard college clubbing?
If you’ve been living here a while, you’ve already figured out your favorite place to kick back and have a beer. If you’re new around these parts, though, it’s too easy to end up at The Complex every night. Nightlife in the city offers a lot more than well drinks and house music. Whatever you’re looking for, here are some of Providence’s best night spots.

Club Hell

Sure, the demons and gargoyles that decorate Club Hell might be scary, but on Tuesday nights, it’s impossible to be scared for long. Tuesday at Hell is ‘80s Retro Night, when anyone and everyone dresses up in fluorescent finery and dances around to awesome 80s music like Madonna, Depeche Mode and The Cure. Even the hardcore kids who normally fill up the place drop their spiked collars and jump into the all 80s dance party. If you love the 80s like I do, this is a place you definitely want to check out. If huge hair and spandex isn’t your thing, check out Club Hell on Wednesdays for Sin Fest, Thursdays for Hip Hop, or Fridays for Rock and Roll High School. College night is Saturday night. 73 Richmond Street, www.club-hell.com

Providence Black Repertory Company

Whether you want to heat things up with salsa dancing on Wednesday nights, or you want to get down with Neon Soul Cabaret on Saturdays, Xxodus Café at the Black Rep is your world music antidote to the Fergie and Soulja Boy you’ll hear at all the other dance clubs. Mondays are Polyphonic open mic nights, while Tuesdays feature Caribbean sounds and Thursdays focus on Brazilian and Cape Verdean music. It’s the hottest (and coolest) nightspot in town. 276 Westminster Street, www.blackrep.org

Mirabar

You don’t have to be gay to go to Mirabar, but having some gay friends with you helps. Either way, this two-story dance club is definitely worth checking out. The music is great, and there’s plenty of eye candy in the form of mostly unclothed shot boys. A nice change from seeing all of those miniskirted shot girls everywhere, right ladies? Mirabar is 18+ every night, and only charges cover half the week. Tuesday nights are Country and Western nights – a rare occurrence in Providence – and on Wednesdays, there are cash prizes for strip poker. 35 Richmond Street, www.mirabar.com
