Drink Like a Tourist

Providence's Hotel Bars
Hotel Bars
(photography by: Kate Kelley)

It used to be that the hotel bar was the last place you wanted to be, what with the bright lights and big city calling. Now with hotel conglomerates and upscale boutique hotels crowding Providence, that's all changed. For those seeking traditional mixology, craft beers, and upscale sensibilities, your room is definitely ready.

Agora @ Westin Providence One West Exchange Street

Consistent and familiar, Agora holds a place in the hearts of countless convention goers who stop back year after year. If it's not the white marble bar, or the famous bourbon sirloin sliders, or the eight leather-padded barstools with backs and armrests to hold you up after a long hard day, it could be Leslie, the bartender, who is legendary for remembering names. Thirteen years. Let's hope she never leaves.

Temple Downtown @ Renaissance Providence Hotel 120 Francis Street

Descend Temple Downtown's sweeping staircase--candle-lit and marked by Masonic symbols and graffiti art--to an open expanse of black and white checkerboard marble with a lavish lounge and an eclectic dining room where hushed voices set the mood. The dark woods and comfortable seating make it feel more like a destination than a pit stop. A team of smart, beautiful mixologists will help you choose from signature drinks made with fresh herbs and juices. The wine list, despite some elegant choices, is surprisingly affordable.

Shula's 347 Grill @ Hilton Providence 21 Atwells Avenue

Shula's 347 (named for Hall of Fame coach Don Shula, whose 347 wins are the most in NFL history) is starting to draw some cheers from the local crowd. There are pigskin-covered walls, flat-screen TVs, and discounted parking if you stop in before going to the Dunk next door. When you realize the Patriots' opponents stay here, you'll gain a new appreciation for the place. You'll find a well-stocked bar and some of the tastiest pub food around, including Certified Angus Beef burgers and steaks.

McCormick & Schmick's @ the Providence Biltmore 11 Dorance Street

Between the Rhode Island Convention Center, City Hall, downtown businesses, and the mall, the Biltmore is so centrally located that you could stumble in by accident if you don't watch where you're going. Hotel guests blend in with regulars and the bar has enough space to make you feel right at home. They're famous for seafood, but discover their $1.95 Bar Menu, which features a half-pound cheeseburger, steamed mussels, Buffalo wings, and you might come back for more.

Brio Lounge @ Providence Hotel 311 Westminster Street

Tucked away in the city's Arts and Culture District, the Providence Hotel offers one of the city's best-kept secrets: its piano lounge. Most nights, you'd never know, but the Brio Lounge is a regular way station for Downtown theater patrons thanks to its great bar and affordable valet parking deal. With its late 19th century influence, Austrian crystal chandeliers, and vintage piano lounge sensibilities, it's easy to imagine the place packed to the rafters with people enjoying a cocktail before the show.
