7 Reasons Moms Need StyleWeek

Posted by jensenecal

No doubt you’ve seen loads of beautiful pictures from the amazing designers that showcased their spring/summer 2013 collections at last week’s StyleWeek Northeast. From the colorful and bold fabrics to the whimsical or chic silhouettes, the entire week’s worth of shows were nothing less than stunning eye-candy. As a mom of three girls, I couldn’t have been more excited to attend the last two nights of the event. Sure, I wear a retainer to bed (you don’t mess with good teeth, people) and sometimes substitute the phrase “beach look” for “lack of shower,” but I love fashion just as much as the next girl. Here’s my list of reasons every mom needs StyleWeek:

1. It’s the perfect girls’ night out. Any time you can grab your girlfriends, get dolled up and head out to town, you’re already winning. Yes, I may have lost brownie points as I pulled into the Biltmore valet with my sweet minivan that currently (and loudly) has a loose heat shield, but once I stepped out of those doors in my Jeffrey Campbell wedges, and walked myself to the front hotel lobby without falling, I was BACK IN THE GAME.

2. The Accessory Showcase. Stepping off the elevator and moving slightly beyond check-in, two floors of fun, local accessory vendors filled the space. Bracelets, necklaces, statement pieces, handbags and more gleamed from the tables. It took every ounce of willpower to not buy whatever my eyes fell on. This part of the event is open to the public, so I suggest that even if you don’t have a ticket to the shows at the next StyleWeek, HEAD TO THE ACCESSORY SHOWCASE. Even if your fashion staple is jeans and a tee, grab yourself a spiked handbag or shoe and you’ve immediately transformed from PTA to WHO'S THAT GIRL?

3. Wine. (And maybe Jack Daniels.)

4. Friends. One of my favorite parts of any social event is actually SEEING the people I talk to daily online. As a blogger who works from home, I do a whole lotta social media chatting through the computer screen. Which works out fine when I have three kids hanging from the rafters and a real-life coffee meeting isn’t anywhere on the radar, but when there’s a chance to give someone a hug that doesn’t involve emoticons, life is good.

5. Meeting new people. I love meeting new people. Whether it’s a new teacher at my daughter’s school or the new deli guy at BJ’s (be nice to your deli cutters, for they determine if your daughter’s bento box turkey and cheese roll will actually roll), I enjoy sparking up new conversation in all settings. StyleWeek was no different, where I met new marketing, design, media, business, and fashion personalities. All of which I now follow on Facebook and will no doubt hog their feed with news about my naked children. Everyone wins.

6. The talent. Where do I even begin? Providence (and the Northeast) has so much TALENT. The designers are brave, bold, creative, innovative, colorful, keen, chic and an entire boatload of FUN. I was beyond impressed with the fashions that walked that runway and found myself saying, “I want to wear that,” more times than I can count. I also found myself saying, “These runway lights are insanely bright” but I suppose that’s the point. Besides, the bright lights were perfect for watching the onlookers’ incredible face expressions from across the room. You think fireworks bring out the oohs and aahs? You haven’t been to StyleWeek yet.

7. Jonathan Joseph Peters. Jonathan closed StyleWeek with a showstopper. His collection and accessorizing was not only outstanding (and totally ghetto-diva fabulous), but his performance and delivery were theatrical and playful. The models acted along, chatting on their smartphones, all to the lyrics of the song, “I Seen Beyonce at Burger King.” The music was loud, the lyrics were hysterical and the show was just that- A SHOW. When we passed Jonathan later in the lobby and congratulated him, the first thing he said with a smile was, “I think it’s clear from my show that I don’t take myself too seriously.” I hope he never does.
