Revival Brewing Company

Sean Larkin: Rhode Island brewmaster at large

Posted

Perhaps the biggest success story when it comes to local spirits is Sean Larkin’s. Larkin has been the biggest name in local beer for years, first as brewmaster of Trinity Brewhouse, then at Narragansett Beer (positions he still holds – he’s also president of the Rhode Island Brewers Guild). A little less than three years ago, he founded Revival Brewing Company with Owen Johnson of Betaspring and Creative Director Jeff Grantz.

Right now, Revival is brewing its iconic Saison, an unfiltered American Farmhouse Ale; Double Black IPA, a Cascadian Dark Ale; Juliet 484 Imperial Stout, named after the Russian submarine that once called Providence home; and Larkin’s Dry Irish Stout. The beers are available all over the city, at places like The Avery, AS220, The Dorrance, Julian’s and Lili Marlene’s.

Given Sean’s reputation as a master crafter of brews, Revival got instant attention in Providence. The problem was, and still is, the lack of a tasting room. Revival still brews its beers at Trinity, using their equipment. Not for long, though. The company has a proposed site for a 10,000 barrel brewery on Westminster Street, which will allow Larkin to brew all of Revival’s beers there, plus other collaborations.

But, that’s not all that Sean Larkin has brewing right now. The big news this month in local beer is Brutopia, a brewpub slated to open in Cranston this month. Brutopia is part of the restaurant group that owns English Cellar Ale House and Coco Pazzo on Angell Street, and Succotash in the Jewelry District. Larkin’s role, clearly, is Master Brewer – and he’s crafting up some beers designed to complement the restaurant’s barbecue menu (they’ll be smoking their meats in house with a hickory pit smoker). If you want something a little stronger, the restaurant will also house a bourbon bar.
