Though Rhode Island is the smallest state, it happens to be home to 12 private and public colleges/universities, five of which are located in Providence. With the cost of a higher education on everyone’s mind, many places offer discounts for students on a budget. For any student not looking to spend a bundle, these participating locations offer discounts with a valid student ID.

1. One of the most visited places in the city is the Providence Place Mall, which is home to 160 stores and restaurants. Within the mall there are six retailers that offer a student discount:

  • H&M – 15% off in-store purchases
  • Ann Taylor – 15% off full-price, in-store purchases
  • Banana Republic – 15% off full-price, in-store purchases 
  • Charlotte Russe – 10% off full-price, in-store purchases
  • J. Crew – 15% off full-price, in-store purchases 
  • The Limited – 15% off full-price, in-store purchases

2. College girls (and their significant others) rejoice! Alex & Ani, a well-established jewelry retailer and Rhode Island-native company, is very popular among the student crowd. For this reason, the retailer offers a 10% discount on any in-store purchase.

3. Anyone looking for a relaxing activity with “spa treatment” should visit Citron Spa. Citron Spa offers 20% off any service for students with a valid ID, and provides facials, massages, waxing/threading, and more. To get an idea, their nail bar offers a “Mini Citron Manicure” for $18, “Mini Citron Pedicure” for $35, and “Mini Citron Mani Pedi” for $50 before the discount.

4. Down the road from Providence Place Mall and walking distance from Brown University is Seiren Hair Salon. This salon, which offers 20% off cuts for students every Wednesday, provides services for both girls and guys.

5. Right inside the mall itself is Providence Place Cinema 16 and IMAX (of Showcase Cinemas). The theater offers a student discount, plus, “Bargain Tuesdays”, when movie tickets are only $7.50 for regular, and $9.50 for IMAX.

6. Students looking to catch a live performance can visit Providence Performing Arts Center for both plays and musicals. Student Rush tickets become available two hours before a show begins, and are sold (in person, with a valid student ID) at a 50% discount depending on the show.

7. The Rhode Island School of Design houses many collections and exhibits in their RISD Museum for any art lover to enjoy. College students can enter the museum for $5 every day except for Sundays, which allows free entry to all. RISD students in particular can enter for free any day of the week.

8. College students looking for a quick and affordable bite to eat will enjoy Geoff's Sandwiches, a College Hill staple for over 40 years. It’s been featured on the Food Network! Local students flock to this tiny eatery for their variety of sandwiches, all listed on the blackboard covering the walls of the establishment, and for their free pickles. Students receive 15% off after 3pm daily, and anyone can get “two for one” sandwiches on Tuesdays.

9. For a more upscale meal, Fire + Ice in the bottom of Providence Place Mall offers a $10.99 all-you-can-eat special to college students with a valid student ID on Mondays for dinner (4:00pm-10:00pm).

10. Though Providence is a great city with so much to do, it’s nice to get out and visit other places from time to time, such as Boston or New York City. Students in the Providence area come from various states, so many travel home for the holidays and other breaks. Amtrak is one transportation option for students, and offers a Student Advantage Card. Cardholders are eligible to receive a 10% discount on adult rail fare on most Amtrak trains all year long. Providence Amtrak is located in the Providence Train Station.
