On Sunday, June 3rd 2018, families from all over Rhode Island will participate in the Eighth annual AIDS Orphan Care Walkathon at Lincoln Woods State Park.
The walkathon begins with registration at 10 am, and walk at 11 am. Online registration is also available at www.AIDSorphancarewalk.dojiggy.com.
AIDS Orphan Care improves the lives of orphans and HIV-positive children by partnering with effective, grassroots orphan-care projects in Lesotho, Southern Africa. Projects currently supported include:
1) Mamelo Primary School, providing a free K-7 education to over 200 orphans and HIV-positive children.
2) The Peanut Butter Project, distributing peanut butter to malnourished HIV-positive children through Baylor Pediatric HIV Clinics.
AIDS Orphan Care was founded by Deborah Kutenplon, a Nurse Midwife from Rhode Island who spent a year working at an HIV clinic in Lesotho in 2008-2009. Lesotho is a tiny country in Southern Africa with the world’s 3rd highest HIV rate. 1 in 4 adults is HIV-positive. With a total population of 2.1 million people, Lesotho has over 100,000 AIDS orphans.
AIDS Orphan Care supports the essential needs of orphans in Lesotho—food, shelter, clothing, education and health care. AIDS Orphan Care, an all-volunteer project, is fiscally sponsored by the International Child Resource Institute (www.icrichild.org).
