You won’t find another restaurant quite like Ella’s Fine Food and Drink, the exquisite fine dining establishment in Westerly. First, there’s the concept: seasonally influenced American food with a distinctly Asian flair, prepared with classical French techniques. Next, there’s the team: husband and wife duo James and Jeanie Roland, who own the restaurant (and another in Florida, The Perfect Caper) with Chef Jeanie in the kitchen every night. Then, there are the accolades: Chef Jeanie took on the challenge to Beat Bobby Flay on the Food Network, and won against the Iron Chef himself – never mind that when Taylor Swift wanted a cooking lesson last year during her stay at her Watch Hill home, it was Ella’s she chose to learn from.
The Dining Room
But really, there’s the food. Locally sourced dairy, produce and seafood. Certified organic meat. Tastes that change with the seasons. The dinner menu ranges from gourmet comfort food – Momma’s Chicken is buttermilk fried chicken with sweet corn butter, wilted greens and white cheddar grits – to worldly cuisine, like the Duck a Deux Facons, garlic marinated duck breast, confit leg and slow cooked flageolet with seasonal greens, smash of fingerling confit and thyme jus. The Crabby Scallop is jumbo lump crab topped grilled scallops, served with coconut-cilantro infused forbidden black rice, shanghai bok choy and mirin-yuzu apricot beurre blanc. The Filet la Maison is a house filet mignon with asparagus and Drambuie-peppercorn sauce, served with a side of lobster mac and cheese.
In the lounge, things are more casual, but equally delicious. The lounge menu offers creative smaller plates like Duck Confit with warm bacon dressing and a duck fat fried egg; Shrimp Tempura with asparagus and miso vin; Baked Clams with wilted kale, mascarpone, ginger and bacon; and Salmon Tartare with a wonton crisp, sweet soy, chili aioli and micro greens. There are salads like the Salade Parisian: frisée, arugula, shaved Gouda, pan fried chicken and hazelnut vin. Ella’s Burger is a local blend of beef with bacon onion jam, a cheddar gruyere blend, and house-made horseradish dijonaise and catsup. The Crispy Chicken Sandwich is duck fat fried, and comes with frites.
Chef Jeanie Roland
“I feel the seasonality much more in New England and really enjoy this aspect as a chef,” Chef Jeanie, a five-time James Beard Award nominee, says. “My favorite season in Rhode Island is early fall when we are starting to get the fall produce and still have the summer’s bounty. The Westerly area has great local farms and they inspire myriad specials.” During the warm weather, enjoy dining and drinks on the outdoor patio - but during any season, enjoy creative, gourmet takes on local bounty at Ella’s Fine Food and Drink.
