Folk Art Quilt Show at South County Museum

Posted by ramakerad

South County Museum’s 32th annual Folk Art Quilt Show is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 15 – Sunday, Sept. 17.

This popular show, which attracts more than 400 quilt enthusiasts, will feature about 100 contemporary quilts from all over New England as well as an impressive exhibit of heirlooms from the museum’s collection.

Each day, associate director Blaire Gagnon will make a presentation on the Rev. Harold F. Friend signature quilt, which was presented to the Baptist minister by his congregation in 1934 and donated to the museum in 1993 by his daughter Florence. Friend served as curator of the museum from 1946-1964. Gagnon will talk about the journey of the minister and his quilt from Port Maitland, Nova Scotia, to Exeter, R.I. She will also present a “bed turning,” discussing four additional quilts that relate to the museum’s founding in anticipation of its 85th anniversary next year.

To participate in the show, fill out a submission form by Aug. 15. The forms include the size, pattern, method of quilting and a photograph. See http://southcountymuseum.org/folk-art-quilt-show/ for more information on submissions, tickets, photos of the quilt to be raffled this year, and previous show quilts.

It takes a group of volunteers three days to hang the quilts throughout the museum’s Metz Exhibit Hall. When the show opens on Friday a groups of “white glovers” are on site wearing cotton gloves to handle the quilts if visitors wish to closely examine them or see the reverse side.

The museum is also offering a special access day 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 14 for seniors and others who may need accommodations to make viewing the quilts more enjoyable. Contact the museum at 401.783.5400 to schedule a visit.

Show tickets are available online or at the door. Cost is $10 per person, or $4 for children under 12. Museum members are free. Raffle tickets for $1 can also be purchased.
