There’s no doubt that Providence has fallen head over heels for a French favorite. A slightly more sophisticated cousin of the pancake, the crêpe is quickly becoming a city staple. We set out to taste some of the area’s finest French fare. Check out some of our favorites.
Distinguished Indeed
True to its name, The Duck & Bunny’s Distinguished Lincoln crêpe is a sophisticated harmony of sweet and savory. The combination of Black Forest ham and gruyere with caramel mustard left us craving seconds as just a hint of cheese toed the line between dinner and dessert. The crêpe falls in the perfect middle ground between the two, and is as neat as Lincoln’s top hat with ham and crêpe of equal thickness. 312 Wickenden Street. 270-3300, theduckandbunny.com

The Golden Ratio
Savory crêpes have stolen the show, and Rue de l’Espoir is a true star. Their standout bacon, egg and cheese crêpe perfectly balances thick, smoky bacon and fluffy scrambled eggs. You won’t worry about a lack of flavor here as even our biggest condiment connoisseurs agree the eggs don’t even need hot sauce. The Rue is set to close its doors after 39 years on August 9, so try one while you still can! 99 Hope Street. 751-8890, therue.com

We Want S’more
La Crêperie’s S’mores crêpe is the perfect dessert mashup. Ground graham cracker keeps the sweetness in check while the use of Nutella, rather than conventional chocolate, makes this rendition taste better than traditional s’mores. The essential toasted marshmallow makes a definite appearance, but isn’t overpowering. The best thing about this crêpe? You now have permission to eat s’mores whether you’re near or far from a campfire. 82 Fones Alley. 751-5536, creperieprov.com

Nice to Sweet You
For those who have yet to join the crêpe craze, Modern Diner’s mixed berry crêpe with mascarpone cheese filling is the perfect introduction. The crêpe itself is simply sweet, but the berry topping and mascarpone filling really set this dish apart. The combination of sweet filling and tart berries is reminiscent of classic summer treat, the Creamsicle. This crêpe is definitely one for dessert. 364 East Avenue, Pawtucket. 726-8390.
