Giant Squid Attacks the Local Arts and Music Scene

An underground festival packs twelve full hours of music, art, food and more onto Harris Ave.

Even though it’s still only the middle of the season, it’s never too early to start preparing for those end-of-summer blues. Close out the summer of 2013 with a bang at the second annual Giant Squid Festival at Dusk (301 Harris Ave.). Twelve jam-packed hours on August 31 will include an outdoor BBQ and show featuring the various musicians and visual artists housed in the Ajay Land building just down the street. It started off as a celebration for the hard work of the diverse group of artists who rent out space in the building. These artists produce, design, promote, tour, organize and advertise their own art while also working full or part time. However, this year, in addition to celebrating this group of exceptional artists, Giant Squid will also be helping some of them. Mike Pagano, event organizer and musician, says, “This year we have decided to give back to our community, as well. A mutual friend of all of us, Mikey Belcastro, had a cerebral hemorrhage a few weeks ago and he is uninsured. So half of the proceeds will go to his medical bills and the other half will be going to Girls Rock RI, an organization with which one of our members (Shannon Le Corre) is heavily involved.”

So, what exactly will be happening at Giant Squid? There will be multiple food trucks, drink specials, over a dozen bands, visual artists producing live work and, of course, some cool tracks DJ-ed by Mike Pagano himself. Join in the fun on Saturday, August 31, from noon-midnight, at Dusk; it’s a chance to experience some underappreciated talents and give back to the artist community.
