Kennedy Plaza Gets A Much Needed Facelift

A better fit for buses, cars and pedestrians

Posted

For a while now, navigating Kennedy Plaza – whether by foot, car or bus – has been a special kind of terrible. While the construction has been a short-term pain for a long-term pleasure, the ripped up, unsightly city hub really couldn’t go away fast enough. But now, we’re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel: the brand-new, vastly improved Kennedy Plaza will reopen on January 17.

What’s better, you ask? Simply: a lot. The expanded base of bus stops, which will now be on three sides of Burnside Park and both sides of the Plaza, means that there’s a lot more room for buses, pedestrians and trees. There are also new bus shelters for every stop, automated ticket machines and more security cameras. The result is a much safer, more brightly lit, more attractive city hub. And there are more in the pipeline: now that voters have approved a $35 million transit bond, RIPTA will be improving other city transportation areas, too.
