Our Favorite Love Story Ever

Two of our 2011 Most Eligible Singles are engaged, and we're totally taking credit for it

Kristin Walcott and Evan Matthews met at the photo shoot for our 2011 "Most Eligible Singles" story, in which they were both featured. They hit it off, started dating, and now are engaged to be married. It's our single greatest Most Eligible success story. As we celebrate a new year of bachelors and bachelorettes, we caught up with our favorite couple and got the scoop on dating, relationships and how they make it work.

What drew you to each other when you were part of Providence's Most Eligible Singles in 2011?
Kristin: To be honest, I wasn’t interested in Evan at first. I was nervous at the photo shoot, so I hit the bar! That was where I first met him and we really hit it off. I felt very comfortable talking to him and greatly enjoyed his company, but had my eye on someone else. It wasn’t until several months after, and a few other encounters with him that the spark” started. I always found myself chatting away the evening with him in social situations and found him extremely intelligent and interesting. In May 2011, he asked me out for a “drink thing.” We had a great time as usual, but it wasn’t until he kissed me good night that I thought, Woah…. this guy is something special!

Evan: I think when my 15-year-old daughter reads our responses she's going to die a little bit inside... But I digress. I think what drew me to Kristin was that she was different, had kind of an accent somewhere between a southern drawl and Texas twang, and I kept thinking, How did she get here from New Mexico?

How was your experience of being featured in the story? What impact did it have as the two of you began dating?
Kristin: I had a great time and made many wonderful friends because of it. For a month or two I would occasionally get stopped in a store by someone who recognized me. (The joys of mini-celebrity in a small state!) As far as our dating, it was always just a funny story to tell people. They ask how we met and we say we were both the Top 10 Singles in Providence – what are the odds?!

Evan: Honestly, being a single dad, I really wanted to keep it on the down-low as much as possible, but it was fun meeting all the other people involved. And, as Kristin said, we always have a fun story to tell.

When is the wedding? How's the planning going?
Kristin: June 14. Planning is moving along well. The wedding is super low-key, and I work in the event business so the process is pretty smooth sailing. We are having the wedding at our house in Edgewood, and our florist, photographer, caterer, etc., are all good friends of ours. Actually, Miss Wensday, one of the other 2011 singles will be the one performing the ceremony!

Evan: What wedding?

How do you make your relationship work so well?
Kristin: I would say communication and effort. We always make it a point to talk things through and share our feelings (not so easy for guys to do). Even through a huge blow-up, once the dust has settled, we talk about it. We also always make it a point to go on dates, kiss hello and goodbye, and go out of our way to do favors for each other.

Evan: What she said.

Have your views of dating, relationships and meeting the right person changed at all since the Most Eligible story?
Kristin: Oh, yes! We have both been married before, and during our very first conversation, we both swore we would never get married again.

Evan: Yes, I really thought I would never marry again and was happy dating, but I definitely met the right person for me in Kristin.

What advice do you have for this year's Most Eligible?
Kristin: Keep your eyes and mind open. I may have never seen what a truly amazing partner Evan could be. But I also value the amazing friends I met through the experience as well

Evan: Go to lots of Providence Monthly events.
