PVD Skater and Artist Upcyles Old Boards

Steve Duque turns old skateboard decks into works of art

Posted

A local artist combines two of his life’s passions – art and skateboarding – to create truly unique and striking pieces. “All my work is handmade from repurposed skateboards. I upcycle the used/broken decks into functional pieces such as pens, key chains, earrings, necklaces, key racks, back scratchers, coasters, and magnets,” explains Steve Duque, artist, longtime skateboarder and founder of Duque Skate Art. “I am a native Rhode Islander and I've been skating for 20 years. I use 100% locally collected skateboards from all over Rhode Island.”

Steve started skateboarding when he was 13 and says that over the years it’s taught him many valuable life lessons. For 15 years, he’s been saving up his old decks and now puts them to awesome use. “Being able to create art from skateboards is such a rewarding feeling,” Steve says. “I love it so much.”

You can check out Steve’s first solo gallery show, “Upcycled Life,” on Saturday August 1. From 6-8pm, Steve’s work from the past two years will be on display. You can also check out Duque’s Facebook or Etsy page to get a preview of the kind of funky pieces Steve makes. 131 Washington Street, Downcity Providence. www.facebook.com/DuqueSkateArt
