David Kertzer wins a Pulitzer Prize for biography

Posted

Big congratulations are in order for Brown University’s former provost and professor of anthropology, David Kertzer. Kertzer’s 2014 dual biography on Pope Pius XI and Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, The Pope and Mussolini: The Secret History of Pius XI and the Rise of Fascism in Europe was awarded the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for biography/autobiography. Based on seven years of research in the Vatican and Fascist archives, the book reveals the secret relationship between the pope and the dictator. Pulitzer judges described the book as “an engrossing dual biography that uses recently opened Vatican archives to shed light on two men who exercised nearly absolute power over their realms.”

Kertzer graduated from Brown in 1969 and is the Paul R. Dupee Jr. Professor of Social Science and professor of anthropology and Italian studies at the university. He served as provost from 2006 to 2011 and has published a number of other works and articles. Visit Kertzer’s website to learn more about the book and his other published works.
