Warhol Comes to RISD

Pop icon’s photography to be featured at new RISD Museum exhibition

Posted

The RISD Museum always enjoyed a close and unique relationship with the late pop icon Andy Warhol. In fact, his cow wallpaper actually adorns one of the entrance walls to the museum itself. But it all started back in 1969 when the artist was invited to curate an exhibition from the museum’s permanent collection. Spurning traditional choices from the collection, the ever-unpredictable Mr. Warhol produced an unexpected mélange of articles that left organizers scratching their collective heads and created what became a landmark exhibition called Raiding the Icebox. The event has taken on an almost mystical significance as a precursor of artists’ interventions of the ‘90s that helped rethink the nature of traditional collecting museums. The newest Warhol-RISD collaboration will begin on January 31 and will include a display of 150 Polaroid and black and white photographs taken by the artist that served as the basis for many of his later silkscreen paintings, drawings and prints. Not sure if the Campbell’s soup can made the cut.
