Women in Film

The Womanimation festival returns

Posted

Calling all lovers of film: on Saturday, June 27, head over to the AS220’s Black Box for Womanimation!, a celebration of the works of women animators from around the world.  See the works of acclaimed revered artists from North and South America, Europe, and the Middle East and explore the ways these filmmakers tackle the struggle women face when trying to gain self-acceptance.  The international roster of films shows how women find their identity in diverse cultural situations.   Toni Pennacchia, Creative Director of MergingArts Productions, explains that the festival is a source of empowerment for women outside of traditional feminism.   “Most Oscar-nominated films are made by men.  It’s empowering to show women in areas in which they are usually the minority, such as animation and film.”  What’s another thing that makes the festival unique?  “The program is extremely cohesive.  We selected films that focus on the central theme of self-acceptance.”  Showings will be held at 4:00, 6:00, and 8:00, with a reception following the final screening where awards, handmade by past participants, will be given to this year’s winners.  Join in this celebration of women all over the globe.   Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door.
