Move Over, Harry Potter

There's a new Quidditch team in Providence

Posted

I have always been a big Harry Potter fan.  I read all the books in a matter of days, have seen all the movies, and have even visited the very magical Harry Potter World at Universal Studios where I proudly geeked out on butterbear and chocolate frogs. So, when I was given the opportunity to chat with the India Point Ashwinders Quidditch team you can just imagine my excitement.

Jeff Blum is one of the founders of the team. When Brown University denied Blum's request for Quiditch to be considered a club sport, the senior took matters into his own hands. With the help of some friends he formed the India Point Ashwinders. (An Ashwinder is a mythical creature in the Harry Potter series). The team practices twice a week at India Point Park and is a member of the International Quidditch Association (yes, that is a real thing), which allows them to compete with Quidditch teams across the country. In fact, the team played in the Southern New England Quidditch Conference in late April and won.

Blum describes the game as a cross between rugby, hide and go seek, and European handball. It incorparates balls of various sizes and purposes, three large hoops and of course, brooms. I would tell you all about it but feel the pictures say it best.
