RI Poet Laureate Tina Cane to read at IMAGO Gallery Sept. 21

Posted by lmegathlin

Rhode Island Poet Laureate Tina Cane will read from two published collections of her poems and from new poems related to the subject of “work” at a free, public event at IMAGO Gallery, 36 Market Street, at 7 p.m. September 21.

Cane will read from her collection of poems, “Once More With Feeling,” published in 2017 and from “Dear Elena: Letters for Elena Ferrante,” poems with art by Esther Solondz published in 2016. She will also read new poems on “work.” Following her reading, Cane will sign copies of her books which will be available for sale.

“Once More with Feeling” is based on Cane's experiences growing up in New York’s Lower East Side, Hell’s Kitchen. “Dear Elena," is comprised of letter-like poems written to the author of the Neapolitan Quartet, a four-part series of novels about two friends growing up in post-war Italy.

Cane received the Fellowship Merit Award in Poetry from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts in 2016. She is also the founder and director of Writers-in-the-Schools, RI and is an instructor with the writing community, Frequency Providence. Her poems and translations have appeared in numerous publications, including The Literary Review, Two Serious Ladies, Tupelo Quarterly, Jubliat and The Common. She also produces, with Atticus Allen, the podcast, Poetry Dose.

Cane’s presentation is part of a series of events sponsored by Imago Foundation for the Arts to support community involvement in a wide range of cultural activities related to the arts, including the current art exhibit featuring work by IMAGO artists Lenny Rumpler and Howard Windham and guest artist Ilse Buchert Nesbitt. Regular gallery hours are Thursday 4- 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
