PVD's Newest Burlesque Troop Puts Us in the Mood

House of Mood is shaking tassels and taking names

Posted

Jennifer Harricharan is a mover and a shaker, literally. The talented (and flexible) lady is the owner of JM Kennedy Dance and Pole Fitness Studio, and has been teaching women core strength with a side of sexy for years. When the husbands started asking when they could see their wives perform what they were learning in pole fitness class, a bulb went off. “It started off as a joke,” she says, but a joke that had merit. “A lot of my clients who come into the studio have a background of singing, dance, cabaret, burlesque.” The idea for House of Mood was born.

House of Mood is a monthly evening of variety performance at the dance studio. (Before you dismiss the location, they have a beer and wine license. You’ll be fine.) “It ranges from cabaret, burlesque, lounge singing, belly dancing,” Jennifer says. “We have silk aerial arts; sometimes we have a speakeasy band. It varies per month, and we al- ways try to show people something different.” The burlesque troop of Jennifer’s students is called the Fringe Follies, and is the highlight of the event. All of the women have different cultural backgrounds, and represent those cultures through their performances. “People are amazed at the talents of the girls who are performing,” Jennifer says. “We definitely don’t have this in Providence.”

The next House of Mood is May 17 at 8:30pm.
