Bernard John Brings Acres Back to the Room

The Providence indie-folk artist marks his first full-length album in nearly 15 years with an Uptown Theater show, a full band, and a 40th birthday celebration

By the time a record takes six years to finish, it’s picked up a few stories. Canceled plans, quiet recoveries, new love, pandemic-era pivots, and the strange suspense of waiting for life to make room for music again all find their way in. For Providence indie-folk artist Bernard John, Acres arrives with that history tucked into the songs. On Saturday, August 8, he brings the long-awaited album to the Uptown Theater for a record release show that also celebrates his 40th birthday.

John’s music doesn’t dress up the hard parts. His writing moves with plainspoken honesty, landing somewhere between melancholy and hope without letting either one take over the whole room. Acres, his first full-length release in nearly 15 years, carries that balance with a lived-in sound rather than a neatly resolved one.

The album began in 2019, when John launched a crowdfunding campaign to record the project. Shortly after reaching his goal, he was hospitalized with what has since been identified as a rare chronic idiopathic condition. Years of medical testing, specialist appointments, and periodic hospital stays followed, pushing music to the side while he focused on his health.

Still, life kept adding new chapters. After his first hospital stay, John met his future wife at a fundraising gala. They married during the pandemic and later founded Ampersand Creative Co., a Rhode Island-based events and marketing company focused on small businesses and creative communities throughout New England.

Over the last two years, John returned to Acres with longtime friend and producer Bruce Pierce of Mooncusser Recording. Together, they remixed and remastered the album from the ground up, tightened arrangements, recorded new songs, and brought in musicians including MorganEve Swain, Spencer Swain, Ryan Hommel, Jon Aanestad, and more.

“Six years and a pandemic gives you a lot of perspective,” says John. “I’ve changed tremendously as a person and as a songwriter since these songs were first written. Being able to return to these songs with that experience helped shape them into what I always hoped they could become.”

That perspective gives the record its shape. Acres doesn’t turn survival into a tidy bow, and it doesn’t confuse sadness with defeat. The album leaves room for grit, patience, tenderness, and the weird little miracle of finishing something that once seemed stuck in the distance.

The August 8 show features John with a full band, along with sets from Rhode Island artists American Echoes, John Faraone, and Brian McKenzie. For listeners who know him from past stages shared with Steve Earle, Langhorne Slim, Joe Pug, and Joan Osborne, the night offers a chance to hear these songs with fresh miles on them. Singles “Flares” and “Alright” are streaming now on Spotify, with the full album arriving this summer.
