Free Summer Concerts Return to Providence with FirstWorks Summer Beats Series

Global music, local parks, and three nights of can’t-miss live performances across the city

Summer in Rhode Island has a rhythm, and this year, it’s louder, livelier, and more global than ever. FirstWorks is turning up the volume once again with its 2026 Summer Beats Concert Series, a trio of free outdoor shows that transform city parks into vibrant stages for music, culture, and community connection.

Now in its seventh season, the series leans into what it does best: bringing people together through sound. “Each concert is more than a performance,” says Kathleen Pletcher, Executive Artistic Director of FirstWorks. “It’s a celebration of our many paths, roots, and cultures, and a welcoming environment in some of our city’s most beautiful places.”

The series opens on July 10 at the Roger Williams Park Boathouse Lawn with internationally acclaimed trumpeter Etienne Charles and his “Gullah Roots” big band. Blending jazz with Afro-Caribbean traditions and Gullah-Geechee cultural influences, the performance promises more than music, with dancers, spoken word, and visual storytelling woven throughout.

On July 24, the energy shifts into high gear as The GroovaLottos take the same stage. Known for their signature “Thump & Soul” sound, the Grammy-nominated group fuses soul, funk, rock, and Afrobeats into a feel-good set designed to get audiences on their feet. Both park concerts pair seamlessly with nearby Food Truck Friday at Carousel Village, making it easy to turn an evening show into a full summer outing.

The finale on August 14 marks an exciting expansion into Providence’s 195 District Park, a seven-acre waterfront green space that has quickly become a hub for community life. Spanish singer-songwriter Pedro Pastor and his band Los Locos Descalzos bring a globally influenced folk fusion sound that blends flamenco, cumbia, and African rhythms with lyrics rooted in change, love, and cultural exchange. At just 31, Pastor has already performed hundreds of shows worldwide, and his Providence debut is poised to be a standout moment of the season.
