The green light is moving to Weybosset Street this fall, and Jay Gatsby is bringing the whole spectacle with him. From November 3-8, The Great Gatsby will fill the Providence Performing Arts Center with champagne-fueled parties, glittering costumes, sharp choreography, and a love story that has been going badly for more than a century.
The North American tour takes F. Scott Fitzgerald’s familiar novel and gives it enough scale to reach the back row. Gatsby is still the mysterious millionaire determined to win back Daisy Buchanan, but his carefully built world now unfolds through a jazz- and pop-infused score, sweeping sets, and an ensemble that keeps the party moving even as everything underneath it starts to crack.
“This production is a big, bold, Broadway version of The Great Gatsby,” said the Estate of F. Scott Fitzgerald. “It’s thrilling to see these indelible characters and iconic moments from the novel come to life on stage.”
The costumes alone arrive with serious credentials. Designer Linda Cho won the 2024 Tony Award for her work on the production, filling the stage with tailored suits, beaded gowns, and enough polished excess to make casual attire feel like a missed opportunity.
Still, the show isn’t only selling a beautiful party. Gatsby’s world works because everyone in it is chasing something slightly out of reach, then behaving as though more money, more attention, or one more perfect evening might fix the problem. The musical leans into that tension, giving audiences the glamour they came for without letting the consequences disappear behind the confetti.
That balance may explain why the story keeps finding new audiences. The clothes change, the music gets louder, and the party moves to Providence, but the urge to reinvent a life and pretend the past can be recovered remains stubbornly familiar. Tickets go on sale Friday, August 7 at 10 AM. Visit ppacri.org for tickets, showtimes, and more information.
